Expansion of jail aids treatment for heroin addiction

The Campbell County Fiscal Court has begun the process of expanding the Campbell County jail to house 108 more inmates. This will be accomplished by converting the former district court offices at 600 Columbia St., Newport, adjacent to the current Campbell County Detention Center, into a secure facility.

A Substance Abuse Program (SAP) is being created by representatives from Boone and Kenton Counties and the community wide effort known as the Heroin Response Team. Drawing on best practices from around the nation, the new program will be installed in the new jail space, and the hope is it can be used elsewhere in Northern Kentucky and around the state.

The new addition to the jail is the fifth and final phase of a plan for expansion that began in 2005.
